FAQ

Emergency Care Questions

Answers to common emergency care questions

Should I go to the emergency room or your clinic for eye emergencies?

For most eye-specific emergencies, our clinic is often faster and more specialized than a general emergency room. We have ophthalmologists on call and specialized equipment for eye emergencies. However, if you have a life-threatening condition (severe trauma, difficulty breathing, chest pain) along with eye symptoms, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. For chemical burns, we recommend flushing eyes first, then coming directly to our clinic. When in doubt, call our emergency hotline for guidance.

Do I need an appointment for emergency care?

No appointment is needed for emergency eye care. We see emergency patients immediately upon arrival. However, we strongly recommend calling our emergency hotline first so we can prepare for your arrival and provide immediate first-aid instructions if needed. Calling ahead allows us to have the appropriate specialist ready and ensures you receive care as quickly as possible when you arrive.

What should I do if I get something in my eye?

Do not rub your eye, as this can scratch the cornea. Try blinking to see if tears flush it out naturally. If that doesn't work, use artificial tears or clean water to flush the eye. If the object is embedded, painful, or you can't remove it after gentle flushing, seek emergency care. For chemical exposure, flush immediately with clean water for 15-20 minutes and then come to our clinic or go to the nearest emergency facility.

Are emergency services covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans cover emergency eye care, but coverage varies. We accept all major medical insurance plans and will work with your insurance company to maximize your benefits. For uninsured patients, we offer payment plans and work to make emergency care accessible. Our priority is your vision health, so we'll provide necessary emergency treatment regardless of insurance status and work out financial arrangements afterward.

What if I have an emergency outside of regular hours?

Our emergency services are available 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Call our emergency hotline at any time, and our on-call ophthalmologist will guide you. For after-hours emergencies, we have staff on call who can meet you at our clinic. If you cannot safely travel, we can coordinate with local emergency services. We maintain the same standard of care regardless of when you need us.
