What is LASIK Surgery?

A quick, safe procedure that reshapes your cornea for clearer vision

How LASIK Works

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a refractive surgery that uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea, correcting how light enters your eye. This allows light to focus properly on the retina, providing clear vision without glasses or contacts.

The procedure is quick (about 10-15 minutes per eye), painless, and performed using only eye drops for anesthesia. Most patients notice significantly improved vision within 24 hours.

Benefits of LASIK

  • Rapid Recovery: Most activities resume in 24-48 hours
  • High Success Rate: Over 96% achieve 20/20 vision or better
  • Long-Lasting Results: Permanent vision correction
  • Cost-Effective: Saves money on glasses/contacts long-term
  • Improved Lifestyle: Sports, swimming, travel made easier

FAQ

LASIK Questions Answered

Common questions about LASIK surgery

Is LASIK painful?

No, LASIK is not painful. We use numbing eye drops so you won't feel any pain during the procedure. You may feel slight pressure when the laser is applied. After surgery, some patients experience mild discomfort or a gritty sensation for a few hours, but this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and typically resolves by the next day.

How long does LASIK last?

LASIK provides permanent vision correction. The procedure reshapes your cornea, which remains stable after healing. However, it doesn't prevent age-related vision changes like presbyopia (need for reading glasses after age 40-45) or cataracts. Most people enjoy glasses-free vision for decades, though a small percentage may need enhancement procedures years later due to natural changes in their prescription.

What are the risks of LASIK?

LASIK is one of the safest elective procedures with a very low complication rate. Potential risks include dry eyes, glare, halos, under/overcorrection, and infection (less than 0.1%). Serious complications are extremely rare (less than 1%). Our advanced screening technology and experienced surgeons minimize these risks. During your consultation, we'll discuss your specific risk factors.

Can both eyes be done the same day?

Yes, we typically perform LASIK on both eyes during the same session. This is the standard practice and preferred by most patients as it provides immediate binocular vision and a more convenient recovery. The entire process for both eyes takes about 30 minutes. Some patients with special circumstances may opt for sequential surgery, but this is relatively uncommon.

Does insurance cover LASIK?

LASIK is considered an elective procedure and is not typically covered by standard health insurance. However, many vision insurance plans offer discounts, and we offer several financing options including 0% interest payment plans. We also accept FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and HSA (Health Savings Account) funds. Our financial coordinator can help you explore all available options.
